I took a chicken bus from Granada from the dodgy area of the market, no pictures available. And changed bus in Rivas, the main last town on the road before the boarder.
The place is fairly touristy and you will meet more gringos and other europeans than locals. The beach becomes a nice field of soccer when the tide is low, so locals enjoy themselves until sunset. Which I found really annoying to be suggested 15 times per day some drugs. It almost feels that tourists are meant to consume drugs. Last important point, it can get quite unsafe by night and my mate got almost robbed at 4 am on the way back to the hotel. Just be cautious. While we were there, there actually was a Quicksilver — Surf contest which led on Saturday night to the Pitaya Festival.
The Pitaya festival is a big party set on the Playa Hermosa beach. From San Juan you actually take a free chicken bus which will take an hour to reach the beach, through really unexpected rough road. You actually wonder if there really will be a festival there. The ambiance was awesome, people from all around the world, good vibe of dance hall, reggae, fresh beer and good rhum. The great pictures I took of the end of the contest and the awesome music ambiance of the night which was are not available as my camera got stolen on the beach, this due to a moment of low guard.
